"Disappearing into History: The Ironworks of Munrae-dong"
Originating from textile factories, Munrae-dong evolved into a cluster of ironworks. However, government policies to relocate factories outside Seoul have left many spaces vacant, attracting artists seeking affordable rent. Consequently, Munrae-dong became a unique blend of ironworks, artists, and tourists.
Yet, this distinctive landscape may soon become a rarity.
Nevertheless, Munrae-dong's history now faces a new turning point. The government has decided to relocate 1,279 ironworks from Munrae-dong's machinery and metalworking hub by 2024. Munrae-dong has been a crucial site in South Korea's industrialization under national leadership, playing a significant role in the country's history. Hence, through architecture, Munrae-dong will be remembered.
As Munrae-dong moves forward into a new future, its historical significance will not be forgotten, but remembered.
