Proposal for a multi-generational complex within a privately funded station through donations
Song Hyunsoo Architecture Program, Class of 2025, Instructor : Nam, Soohyun
Chang-dong Station began construction as part of a private investment project in 2005, but due to various reasons, it was halted in 2010. The abandoned construction site left by the private project caused significant problems such as local fragmentation, slum-like conditions, and safety hazards. Additionally, despite a continuous increase in the elderly population, spaces for vulnerable groups, including seniors, have disappeared, pushing them further to the outskirts of the city.
In response, the aim of this project is to transform the neglected station, located in the heart of the city and heavily used by residents, into a space beneficial to the community through diversification of facilities. The project proposes transforming the abandoned station into a multi-generational complex within the community, fostering interaction between different generations which has become increasingly rare in today's society. Specifically, plans include integrating facilities catering to seniors within the complex, addressing the stark inadequacy of elderly care facilities in the area and providing opportunities for interaction between seniors and younger generations to invigorate their lives.
Furthermore, the project intends to enhance Chang-dong Station beyond its role as a mere transportation hub by strategically combining commercial, cultural, and business facilities. The goal is to create a station that is closer to the daily lives of residents, thereby enriching their community experience.
