KALEIDO-SCAPE
Floating on Han River (마포새빛문화숲과 밤섬사이)
Jaewon Song Korean Traditional Architecture Program, Class of 2023, Instructor : Chun, Jin Young
Mapo Sevit Cultural Forest is a park created by undergrounding the Danginri Power Plant, the first thermal power plant in Korea. It is located along the continuum of Hongdae's street culture area, where diverse layers of artistic ecosystems coexist, and it is easily accessible from Han River Park.
Bam Island has been designated as a Ramsar wetland, recognizing its ecological value as a habitat for migratory birds and a natural monument. Despite its potential for eco-tourism and educational purposes, it has been neglected in the heart of Han River, Seoul. "KALEIDO-SCAPE" proposes a cultural and artistic complex that harmoniously coexists with natural ecosystems on a site where cultural and natural flows converge, aiming to awaken the hidden potential value of the Han River.
The suggested prototype is a floating architecture. It can be applied anywhere in the world, responds to rising sea levels and floods caused by global warming, and realizes sustainability by producing its own energy and being easy to move and dismantle.
By expanding the realm of land to water, floating architecture overcomes the limitations of space and provides new architectural possibilities while preserving urban public space. Furthermore, being mobile and not fixed to the ground, floating architecture can adapt flexibly to the ever-changing urban landscape.
