Garak Mall 2.0
Re-proposing a large-scale modern agricultural and fishery retail market
Kim, Mingyu Architecture Program, Class of 2023, Instructor : Oak, Tay Bumn
Garak Wholesale Market, which opened in 1985, has been in operation for a long time, and various problems have begun to arise. And it was things like aging facilities, serious stench, and an indiscriminate mix of wholesale and retail stores.
In the end, the city of Seoul carried out the Garak Market Modernization Project in 2009 with the goal of normalizing the wholesale function of the Garak Market, and the result of the first phase of the project was the modern agricultural and marine products retail market 'Garak Mall', which was completed in 2015.
The existing Garak Mall, which was born in this way, proposes a separate building format with various functions at the design stage and claims to induce a dynamic spatial experience, but the modern retail market lacks consideration on how to handle it architecturally.
As a result, the existing Garak Mall has become a very inconvenient and regrettable facility to be used as a market.
Therefore, we propose a new 'Garak Mall 2.0' that solves the architectural problems of the existing Garak Mall, and presents a direction on how the large-scale modern retail market should be designed in the future.
