Borderline Between Inside-out
A Study on the Design of Korean Culture Experience and Exhibition Facilities in the Space Structure of Traditional Architecture
Yang HyungMo Korean Traditional Architecture Program, Class of 2022, Instructor : Han, Jiman
Korean culture has been constantly developing in various fields from traditional dance, pansori, and hanbok in the past to current k-street dance, k-underground hip-hop, and K-street fashion. In addition, there are many examples of cultural development as well as economic development by developing this into a cultural content industry. The Korean Wave has expanded to all regions and is now enjoying global popularity.
However, in this situation, Korean culture has not yet entered the stage of 'base of common sense'. In the case of Japan, we know that cultural contents such as "sushi" or "ninja" are from Japan around the world, but Korea still lacks awareness globally. In addition, even though Korean culture is constantly developing, in the case of China, attempts are being made to subjugate Korean culture to its own country by attempting the Northeast Project.
China is only an example, and in order to protect the cultural industry moving forward and prevent other cases from appearing, it is planning to plan Korean cultural experience and exhibition facilities in the space structure of traditional architecture. It was thought that the bowl containing Korean culture should be contained in the space structure of Korean traditional architecture, and the plan was constructed with the concept of inside, outside, and boundary that could encompass its characteristics.
The site was designated as Songhyeon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and Jongno-gu is not only the most visited tourist destination by foreigners, but also next to Gyeongbokgung Palace, which represents Korea, so it tries to inherit the context of traditional architectural space structure.
