The building in Seoul, which began to be built in the late 1960s, has been in front of the worries of disappearance for about 60 years.
Every building that has endured a long time has its own history. But not only did we begin to rethink the building over time, but in the meantime the building is gradually disappearing. I think what we miss is the lighting of the time that the old building has, the resilience and reproducibility that can only be felt in it.
YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) Seoul, one of the places that holds the most modern history of the Republic of Korea, started from a hall built in 1908 and was established by a non-profit organization aiming for a super-religious organization. It is a thing, and at the same time, it is also a part of the development project to turn the east-west incense axis centered on the sword after the era under the colonial administration of imperial Japan. In the modern era, YMCA was revitalized in the school district and the youthful district that developed around the alleys, but now it is placed at the time when changes are necessary, such as the gymnasium is aging and the office is kept vacant. It has been done. Through this project, I would like to try to transform YMCA into a botanical garden in the center of the city, respect the identity of the building, and wonder how it can be transformed into the space that people need.
