INTER-SENSORY TUNNEL SCAPE
수색쌍굴터널을 활용한 스파공간과 사운드테라피 공간 제안
Shin Jaewoong Architecture Program, Class of 2023, Instructor : Kim, Jung Soo
수색쌍굴터널 was constructed by Japan in the era of Japanese occupation of Korea, to be used as a supply route, as Japanese Empire was planning to use this tunnel to invade Manchu at that time. Citizens of Korea were forced to be the part of the construction, and the tunnel has abandoned until now even after the independence, as a symbol of unwanted colonial period.
We would like to propose to build a sound therapy combined with the spa.
We began this project from the point, that how could we reuse the abandoned place in a better way. 수색쌍굴터널 is located in 고양시 덕은동, and it has its own physical feature, in which the place is thin and long, hence it makes a huge howling of sound. Furthermore, the spot might also provide unique experience to people because the light can come through merely with the both ends. the name of the area “수색” came from the feature of the terrain, that han river overflows right in front of the houses during raining seasons.
Combined with the own meaning of the area and our wish that this place shall be used as a rehabilitation, we made a decision that spa and therapy could be the best fit. When people confronts their own history, sometimes they should just let it flow and heal with it, instead of continuously reminding the past.
We built an extra wall to harmonize with the level of the mountain, and to be also used to arrange natural lighting and airflow. We expect the wind to come via this wall and circulate the air inside so that natural fragrance shall go through people. Whosoever visits this place will gain unique experience not only as they had never spent time in the place like this, but also to be freely move inside the spot instead of just following the fixed sequence.
