온양온천은 국내에서 가장 오래된 온천으로 삼국시대부터 시작된 역사가 1300여 년에 이른다. 한때는 국내 최고 관광지로 각광받았으나 전국에 대규모 온천단지가 개발되면서 열악한 도시환경, 기존 시설 낙후, 온천을 제외한 빈약한 상권 등의 문제점들로 인해 1990년대 이후 관광객 수가 계속해서 감소하였으며 이는 온양온천의 관광사업에 위기를 가져옴과 동시에 인근 상권들의 몰락을 야기했다. 현재는 해당 사이트의 온양온천관광호텔은 아산의 마지막 남은 유일한 온천관광호텔로 2021년 폐업을 결정했지만, 지역 온천 관광산업 기반의 붕괴와 이가 지역사회에 미치는 파장을 우려하여 잠시 보류중에 있다.

이 프로젝트는 온천을 건축적으로 재해석하여 21세기의 온천에 대해 고민하며 현재 위기를 맞은 온양온천의 틀을 확립 및 발전시키고 또한 지역 내 문화시설로써 지역 커뮤니티 활성과 이러한 영향들이 인근 상권 활성화에 미치는 직간접적인 나비효과들에 목적을 둔다. 과거의 영광이라는 타이틀에서 벗어나 앞으로의 영광을 함께하게 될 온양온천을 상상하며 ‘Renewal’ 온양온천 휴양시설을 아래와 같이 제안한다.



Onyang Hot Springs is the oldest hot spring in Korea, and it has a history of 1,300 years starting from the Three Kingdoms Period. It was once in the spotlight as the best tourist destination in Korea, but due to the development of large-scale hot spring complexes nationwide, the number of tourists has continued to decline since the 1990s due to poor urban environment, poor businesses except for hot springs. This brought a crisis to the tourism business of Onyang Hot Springs and caused the collapse of nearby commercial districts. Currently, the site's Onyang Hot Spring Tourist Hotel is Asan's last remaining hot spring tourist hotel and has decided to close in 2021, but it is on hold for a while due to concerns over the collapse of the local hot spring tourism industry and its impact on the community.

This project is to reinterpret the hot spring architecturally, to think about the hot spring in the 21st century, establish and develop the framework of Onyang hot spring in the current crisis. In addition, the purpose is to activate the local community as a cultural facility in the region and to directly or indirect butterfly effects of these influences on the revitalization of nearby commercial districts. Imagining Onyang Hot Springs, which will share the future glory away from the title of the past glory, I propose the "Renewal" Onyang Hot Spring Recreation Facility as follows.
