을지로, 특히 세운상가 주변 일대는 서울의 제조시설들의 큰 부분을 차지해 왔다. 세운상가를 중심으로 제조, 인쇄, 자재, 가공 등 창작 및 유통의 군락을 이루었고, 그 안에서도 골목별로 블록별로 철공, 인쇄, 전기, 가구 등 전문화된 특색을 나타내었고 그 안에서는 소위 장인이라고 불릴 만한 수십 년 된 전문가들의 터전이었다. 허나 낡은 시설들로 인해 재정비의 필요성이 촉구되어 왔으며, 종묘 앞부터 남산 직전까지 길게 이루고 있는 세운상가와 그 일대를 이르는 대대적인 도시재생사업에 대한 재정비 계획이 논의 되어 왔다.

그 세운재정비구역 한 가운데 위치하고 있는 덕수중학교는 2019년 기준 학생 수 231명에 학급 당 학생 수 15명 정도로 학생 수로 서울 내 중학교 중에서도 최하위권에 속하는 학교이다. 주변에 주거보다는 제조 및 공업 시설들이 자리해 있고, 세운 지구 일대가 낙후되어 가고 있어 보호가 필요한 청소년들에게 적합하지 않은 주위 환경 때문일 것이다.

2020년, 화두가 되는 사회적 현상이자 흐름은 4차 산업, 미래기술에 주목하고 있다. 직업 또한 지난 세기동안 상상할 수 없던 새로운 직업들이 매일 탄생하고 있다. 학생들에게는 한 발 빠르게 미래 산업의 발판이 될 수 있는, 교과 위주의 학업이 아닌 창조적이고 미래지향적인 학교를, 장인들에게는 그들이 작업할 수 있는 공간과 미래에 기술을 전수 할 수 있는 장소를 제안하고자 한다.


Euljiro, especially around Sewoon Shopping Center, has been a big part of Seoul's manufacturing facilities. The center of Sewoon Shopping Center was a cluster of creative and distribution, including manufacturing, printing, materials, and processing. In each alley, ironworks, printing, electricity, and furniture were specialized, and it was a site of decades-old experts who could be called craftsmen. However, the need for readjustment has been urged due to the old facilities, and plans have been discussed for major urban regeneration projects ranging from the front of Jongmyo Shrine to the front of Namsan Mountain.

Deoksu Middle School, located in the center of the Sewoon Redevelopment Area, is one of the lowest middle schools in Seoul with 231 students and 15 students per class as of 2019. This may be due to the surrounding environment, which is not suitable for young people in need of protection, as manufacturing and industrial facilities are located rather than housing around them, and the area around the established district is getting underdeveloped.

In 2020, the social phenomenon and trend that becomes a hot topic is paying attention to the fourth industry and future technology. Jobs are also being created every day, with new jobs unimaginable for the last century. I would like to suggest a creative, future-oriented school, not a subject-oriented academic field, where students can quickly become a springboard for future industries, and for craftsmen, a place where they can work and a place where they can pass on technology in the future.
