Jongno-gu Office, located 350 meters southeast of Gyeongbokgung Palace and located in the center of Hanyangdoseong during the Joseon Dynasty, is estimated to be the remains of Jeong Dojeon, who was a distinguished retainer of the Joseon Dynasty, and is said to have worn plain clothes later. In this area, the buried cultural properties of the Joseon Dynasty excavated in accordance with the development of the maintenance area are preserved and exhibited in the building itself.
The coexistence of preservation and development was prioritized as the first keyword in the design because it was considered to be a model for the surrounding environment in order to renovate the representative building of the district called the ward office. The main building, which has the most traces of the former Sutong Elementary School (the first reinforced concrete structure school building in Korea), will be partially maintained based on the ward's room, and the courtyard, which is currently used as a parking lot, will also be maintained in order to maintain the atmosphere of Jongno-gu Office in the past. The buried cultural properties of Jongno-gu Office, which were discovered through a prospecting survey, were planned to be preserved and displayed in a separate space underground.
In order to prove that it is a representative building of Jongno-gu, the ward office tried to show that it is a representative building of the city center of history through its wooden structure that gives a sense of unity to the surrounding traditional buildings. Consequently, it is possible to have a landmark image and to secure a space feeling which is a problem by vertical extension. With this design plan, you can meet the new Jongno-gu Office, which has been reborn as a large wooden building with a long history.
